Self Care: Nurture Yourself Amid the Chaos

Becoming a mother can be a profound and transformative experience, but it can also be incredibly demanding and stressful.

Between sleepless nights, constant feedings, and the overall responsibility of caring for a newborn, it’s easy for new mums to feel overwhelmed. Making self-care one of your priorities is crucial for maintaining mental health and well-being.

Physical Health

Rest and Nutrition: Adequate rest and a balanced diet are foundational to your well-being. Tricky to achieve when your little human relies so heavily on you, but nap when you can, chores can wait a little and aim to eat easy prep, quick cook, nutritious meals to keep your energy levels up.

Exercise: Gentle exercise like walking, yoga, or postpartum fitness classes can help improve your mood and boost your energy. Search your local area for mother & baby classes, you don’t need to leave your little one, unless you want to.

Emotional Health

Seek Support: Ask for help from family and friends. Chances are, they’re waiting for you to come to them as they don’t want to intrude. Sharing your feelings with someone you trust can alleviate stress and anxiety.

Mindfulness and Relaxation: Practices like meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simply spending a few quiet moments alone can help you recharge.

Social Connection

Join a Support Group: Connecting with other new mothers can provide a sense of community and understanding. Many online forums and local groups offer support and advice. If you’re not keen on a Support Group, there’s also plenty of new mums at baby activity groups too!

Online resources can be a saviour whether you’re looking for facts, advice or just to know others are sharing your experience.

Remind yourself as a new mum

  1. Have realistic expectations, it’s okay not to be perfect.

  2. Make time for yourself for something you enjoy, whether it’s reading, listening to a podcast, a hobby, or a relaxing bath.

  3. Stay connected with friends and family, even if it’s just a quick phone call or text. Social interaction can help reduce feelings of isolation.

  4. Be kind to yourself and recognise the tremendous job you’re doing and allow yourself grace on difficult days.

  5. If you’re struggling with persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or overwhelm, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. Many organisations offer support and even counselling services.

Taking care of your well-being is not a luxury but a necessity. By prioritising self-care and seeking support when needed, you can navigate the challenges of motherhood with greater resilience and joy. Remember, you are not alone, and there are resources out there available to help you as a new parent.
